swissnex San Francisco connects the best of many worlds by bridging the knowledge, energy and competencies in science, higher education, art and innovation between Switzerland, the U.S.A and Canada. Initiated by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) as a public-private venture, and managed in cooperation with the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs, swissnex San Francisco is an annex of the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco. Managing Equity in Swiss and American Universities

“I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done.” (Madame Curie). Similarly this conference discusses what has been done in Swiss and American Universities in order to determine what remains to be done to create full equity.

Practical Information:

Experts from higher education and government in California and Switzerland; Google, Pacific Gas & Electric Co (PG&E), and Perkins Coie LLP law firm, and artists present their vision of how to achieve equity.

Topics include the present status of women faculty, how university administration can promote equity in faculty recruitment, retention, and promotion, how companies manage equity and how equity can be undermined.

Among the Swiss Delegates are representatives from various Swiss universities, the Swiss Federal Program for Equal Opportunity, the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research, and the Swiss National Science Foundation.  

Among the US speakers are Suzanne Ambrose, Director, California Department of Fair Employment and Housing; Martha West, University of California, Davis; Sheila O’Rourke, Executive Director and Special Assistant to the Provost, University of California; Angelica Stacy, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Equity, University of California, Berkeley and more.

On both July 12th and 13th, an evening reception hosted by swissnex concludes each day.  July 12th the keynote speaker is Moira Gunn, host of Tech Nation; July 13th Denice Denton, Chancellor of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

On the final day swissnex has invited local networking organizations for women: Association for Women in Science, the Swiss American Council of Women, the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, and Women in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
