The San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries and the City of Zurich present Twisted Sisters: Reimaging Urban Portraiture; a dynamic, multi-faceted exhibition project celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Sister City relationship. SFAC Galleries piloted the biennial Sister City Exchange in 2011 with Sydney, AU, and has greatly expanded the scope of this important cultural exchange project with the Zurich collaboration. Twisted Sisters features a broad range of unexpected urban portraits by emerging and mid-career conceptual photographers. The resulting 80+ images challenge and occasionally subvert stereotypes associated with these two great metropolises through narratives and landscapes that strip away, twist, or dig under the picture-perfect postcard and expose alternate histories, private lives, hidden views and constructed realities.

Exhibiting artists are Bianca Brunner, Tammy Rae Carland, John Chiara, Georg Gatsas, Pablo Guardiola, Dominik Hodel, Thomas Julier, Sanaz Mazinani, Marianne Mueller, Cat Tuong Nguyen, Thomas Sauter, Rico Scagliola & Michael Meier, Veronika Spierenburg, Lindsey White. Curated by Alexandra Blättler and Meg Shiffler.

Twisted Sisters was presented in Zurich at the Museum Bärengasse, July 4 – September 8, 2013.
