Minister of Interior Visits

Swiss Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of Switzerland’s Federal Department of Home Affairs, traveled to the US in late October to meet with swissnex teams in Boston and San Francisco. After festivities in Boston celebrating the 10th anniversary of the swissnex there, and after presiding over the signing of a joint agreement in neuroengineering between Swiss university EPFL and Harvard Medical School, Burkhalter and his delegation flew West to get to know the swissnex San Francisco team and discuss managed healthcare with experts in the Bay Area.

Mr. Burkhalter spent two intensive days in the region with a delegation including Thierry Lombard, Managing Partner of Lombard Odier & Cie, Professor Antonio Loprieno, Rector of the University of Basel and Head of the Conference of Swiss University Rectors, along with State Secretariat for Education and Research, Mauro Moruzzi, and other Swiss leaders. The group visited swissnex San Francisco-sponsored sound-art exhibition Milieux Sonores at the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts and talked with Swiss entrepreneur and wine-maker Jean Hoefliger at Alpha Omega in Napa.

Before heading home on November 1, the delegation sat down with executives at Genentech and Kaiser Permanente to discuss challenges and innovations in personalized healthcare. But they didn’t depart without forming lasting impressions of swissnex San Francisco.

“swissnex is very dynamic and very efficient,” Burkhalter noted during an early morning breakfast in the San Francisco office attended by the swissnex team and members of Greater Zurich Area and of the Consulate General of Switzerland. “It’s a nice image of economic dynamism for Swiss science and technology, but also for Switzerland’s responsibility toward finding solutions to global problems thanks to new technologies.”
