Swiss Higher Ed To Go Social

Well, social media anyway.

swissnex San Francisco is pleased to announce a new program aimed at boosting the use of social media by Swiss academic institutions. In November, we secured the necessary funding to begin work on “Swiss Academia and the Social Media Landscape,” a novel two-year program made possible by GEBERT RÜF STIFTUNG and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research.

Between early 2011 and early 2013, we will assess barriers and advantages for Swiss academia in taking up tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the like as part of a communications strategy. We will carry out hands-on training, study tours, and monitoring as well as publish an online resource for participants on how to integrate social media into established plans to expand reach globally and locally. Relevant participants from all Swiss higher education institutions including Universities of Applied Sciences and federal laboratories are invited to participate.

The institutions of higher education in Switzerland are among the best in Europe, if not the world. Yet although social media channels afford an innovative way to provide the wired world with access to real-time news and achievements, Swiss higher education has been slower to adopt these tools than counterparts elsewhere around the globe.

Christian Simm, swissnex San Francisco’s director and founder says, “With this program, we hope for Swiss institutions of higher education to be ahead of the curve, not behind it, and to be able to take advantage of the cost-effective tools already at their fingertips. Universities are creating publications, brochures, holding alumni events, offering scholarships, trying to attract new professors. Why not use social media to share that content while at the same time creating opportunities for others to listen, react, and amplify the messages?”
