Whether in product, graphic, interior, furniture, fashion, or textile design, contemporary Swiss design is known for its creativity, detailed execution, and understated, yet self-confident style.

Every two years, Design Preis Schweiz, or the Design Prize Switzerland, showcases the best of contemporary Swiss design. The crop of winners and nominees from 2011 are now hitting the road, and swisnsex San Francisco is proud to present the first American stop on a worldwide tour—at Dwell on Design, the most influential design fair on the West Coast.

This year’s honorees range from Nicola Stäubli’s Reversible Chair to Design Bureau Colin Schaelli’s contemporary furniture, to a lifetime achievement nod for the Freitag brothers, inventors of the eponymous messenger bags made from recycled tarpaulins and seatbelts.

In addition to loads of the best work from Swiss designers and manufacturers right on the show floor, several of the winners (listed below) will appear on the Design Innovation Stage to talk about their work, Switzerland’s place in the global design scene, and how the country continues to be one of the most innovative in the world.

More information

The Design Prize Switzerland is a design competition that is open to Swiss designers living both in Switzerland and abroad, and to designers who make their products in Switzerland or for Swiss brands. Initiated and organized by the Design Center in Langenthal, Switzerland, the prizes are awarded bi-annually by a revolving panel of international judges including greats such as Eugenio Perazza, Jasper Morrison, and Lars Müller. With prizes awarded in categories such as communications, textiles, products, furniture, and fashion, the competition has featured such prominent designers and design-minded personalities and businesses as FREITAG, Jörg Boner, Pierre Keller, Nicolas Le Moigne, Alfredo Häberli, the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, Akris, and many others.

The Swiss Design Prize observes and influences the market, honors outstanding achievements, and sees its role as that of giving uncompromising encouragement to adventurous ideas. It also takes a global perspective, rewarding designers who have traveled far from their home base and have enriched Swiss design with their experience abroad and mature skills.

Design Prize Switzerland at Dwell on Design  is generously supported by Dwell, the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia and is a project of the US-wide program, ThinkSwiss-Brainstorm the Future.
