What will become of books in the digital age? From digitalization to how fonts are used, swissnex San Francisco’s exhibition The Book Lab showcases nine projects born in Swiss, Californian, and French higher education institutions that probe the next chapter for the book.
Take an experimental journey from paper to code with Back in Black, a project that translates a magazine article for the digital medium. Imagine tools that empower familiar books to provide complex visualizations and generative designs in Basil.js. Investigate an artist’s creative practice with a digital pen, dive into transmedia tales of Zurich at night, and much much more.
Where do you think books will go in the future as objects, as art, and as vehicles for knowledge sharing?
Represented institutions are Bern University of the Arts, Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK FHNW), Geneva University of Art and Design, Zurich University of the Arts, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, EnsadLab – École Nationale Supérieure Des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, and Center for Games and Playable Media, UC Santa Cruz.
This exhibition is part of the Futures of the Book, a week of discussions about the future of reading and writing in the digital age, a partnership between the Berkeley Center for New Media, the Books in Browsers conference, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, the Goethe Institute, and swissnex San Francisco.
