U5 Digital Art Residency in San Francisco
June 11, 2019
The work of U5 originates from a fascination of all types of materials, especially everyday items and utensils made of plastic. The accumulation of digital and analogue materials is an important component of their artistic approach, both a ballast and a fund at the same time. Since the collective‘s formation, all work processes have been documented and archived in real time with the help of a self-developed live camera (PALM).
Digital Art Residency in San Francisco
In 2019, the City of Zurich awarded the first scholarship for a digital artist in San Francisco. The Cultural Department has selected U5 as the Zurich-based collective working in the field of Digital Arts to undertake this residency from May 1 to July 31, 2019. The scholarship includes access to swissnex San Francisco’s network and a residency in The Laundry SF.
U5 is a Zürich-based artist collective which works in various media with an agenda to challenge traditional notions of individual authorship. The collective U5 began working together at Zürich University of the Arts in 2007 before graduating as a group in 2011. Their work method depends on the collective’s mutually-agreed founding principles: All members have equal rights, but unanimous agreement is not necessary; all works are created in cooperation; presence and absence influence the work equally.
